UK based party and function band Pop of Ages performed for two stonking corporate parties this weekend both held at UK Hilton Hotels!
Our first gig on Friday night was held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham (right next to the NEC) where our stonking 6 piece line up performed for The Primary Care Diabetes Society who were in situ for their annual conference and they know how to party! The dancefloor was packed from our first number onwards, and the overall band sound and performance including our brass section was phenomenal.
We played a selection of classic hits from the sixties to preesent day that the PCDS audience loved, including Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield which is a superb song – we don’t get to perform it very often as it really needs our brass guys playing trumpet and sax to sound authentic which luckily our six piece line-up has! We threw in some soul and funk classics such as Superstition, Play that Funky Music, Respect, Sweet Soul Music and I Feel Good, which sounded awesome with the live sax and trumpet. I think my favourite song all night was Sway (Michael Buble). Our singer Marc performed it with such musicality, charm and Buble-ness, Mat and Will’s melodic harmony brass lines were a joy, Andy’s Latin salsa was ‘molto bene’ , Dave’s guitar ‘bellisimo’ and watching 100+ people doing the strictly come dancing thang on the dancefloor warmed my heart. It’s moments like that that make this job so rewarding.
The whole event was contracted through SB Communications Event Management, (thanks to Greg for being lighting tech) and the Hilton Metropole staff were polite, helpful and supportive. Thanks to everyone who made this such a memorable occasion for band and audience alike.
Our second gig was at the Hilton Hotel in Swindon for Leadership Martial Arts. It was their annual award presentations dinner dance, and we were booked for two party sets from 10.00pm onwards. It all ran to time, superbly organised by company director John Danby, and again the dancefloor was filled from our first song – although the massive two man kayak placed for charity fundraising purposes had to moved out of the way first!!
The audience was made up of young children, teenagers, parents and adult members of all ages – Pop of Ages perform a great selection of party classics and the four piece line-up had been booked for this event. We therefore focused on performing songs that would appeal to the wide ranging age group, so included modern hits from Take That (Shine), Amy Winehouse (Valerie), Lady Gaga (Poker Face, Just Dance), Kings of Leon (Sex on Fire) , Scissor Sisters (Don’t Feel Like Dancing) and Beyonce (Crazy in Love) as well as pop classics from the 60′s , 70′s and the 80′s including The Beatles, The Kinks, Queen, Bryan Adams, Soft Cell, Human League, Eurythmics and The Human League.
The best moment for me was towards the end of our second set, when I started to play the piano intro to “Don’t Stop Believing” – the screams of the girls combined with the impromptu roar of the crowd, now packed liked sardines onto the dancefloor, made me smile widely with immense pride. It really is a wonderful thing to be able to entertain people and make them happy. I believe everyone enjoyed our music and had a fantastic time, which in turn makes me feel happy and proud.
Thank You to John Danby for looking after us so well. This was a superbly organised event, and we look foward to performing for Leadership Martial Arts again in the future.
