Frequently Asked Questions
How much do you cost?
We offer competitive industry standard rates for a professional band and can normally offer a price and band line up for most budgets – please contact us for detailed information and fees.
Where will you travel to?
We are able to travel both UK wide and internationally.
How much space do you need?
We typically need a performance area of 6×3 metres, but we are able to squeeze into a minimum area of 5×2 metres if space is limited. We’ve performed in all manner of venues from manor houses and hotels to barns, halls, marquees, ballrooms, theatres, nightclubs, universities and intimate clubs – so we’re well versed in making the most of whatever space is available to us.
Can I see you play live?
Due to the nature of our work, we don’t play many public gigs as all of the events we perform at tend to be private weddings, parties or functions. We try to offset this situation by making sure we have plenty of promotional material, including live video, audio recordings, photos and reviews.
If you want to follow our Facebook page, any last minute public gigs that do come in will be promoted on there: Pop of Ages Facebook Page
How is it best to time things?
The band’s performance times are important in making your evening flow properly, and we are totally flexible with this, although we prefer that our performance doesn’t happen at the same time as the buffet or anything else you may have planned at your event.
We also recommend that our second set is timed towards the end of your event, as the dynamic of the performance works really well in this format, and creates a grand finale effect at your party.
Typical timings are as follows:
Arrival 6pm to be set up and sound-checked by 7:30.
Our CDs or your iPod from 7:30 until 8:30.
Live set 1 from 8:30 until 9:30.
Our CDs or your iPod from 9:30 until 10:30 (buffet, evening food etc…)
Live set 2 from 10:30 until 11:30 then our CDs or your iPod until midnight.
Midnight onwards and during breaks we recommend upgrading to hire one of our Disco & DJs (see DJ services below) if your budget allows.
Can I pick the bands playlist?
We are more than happy for you to pick some songs from our playlist which you prefer, but we do ask that we are left to decide the order in which they are played.
It is usually best if you let us know any songs you definitely DO or DON’T want – rather than a hard and fast list that we feel obliged to follow and cannot deviate from should the mood require it.
Will you learn our special song?
Yes, we are happy to learn your special song. We have the advantage over most bands in that we have superb male and female lead vocalists so we can play most songs.
However we are an electric band so ‘acoustic’ songs can be difficult to pull off and don’t really suit our style due to our instrumentation. At the time of booking us, please let us know if there’s a particular song you’d like us to consider learning so we have enough time to learn it well.
Is the video on your website a true reflection of the band?
There are two types of video on our website. Our ‘meet the band’ video is a studio recording with ‘talking head’ information about us plus a selection of live clips to give you a flavour of the band.
The others were filmed at corporate events to give you the opportunity to hear and see us playing totally live and to show the band in live setting. Our clients regularly tell us we are twice as good in ‘the flesh’!
You can view our videos here.
Is the band able to DJ in between your sets?
No, as standard we play our own pre-recorded CD compilations during breaks. Please note this service is ‘un-manned’ and not the same as hiring a DJ so we cannot take on the spot requests. However, we are happy for you to plug in your iPod or laptop and play your own compilations through our PA.
If you want a more bespoke DJ service we highly recommended hiring one of our superb Disco and DJs to compliment the band. This upgrade option is the very best way to ensure your get a great mix of live music from us and all your other favourite songs played in a seamless and professional manner. Our DJs are also happy to extend your entertainment into the early hours if you wish.
TOP INSIDERS TIP… Be mindful of bands offering a ‘Free DJ service’. This is little more than a band member playing songs from a laptop, and they will simply add hundreds of pounds to your quote for the privilege. The price will often work out to be the same price to you as hiring a band and a DJ together, but without the full services of a professional DJ!
Do you have lights?
Yes. We use a compact and super bright LED system at either side of the stage area to light the band and we also provide disco lighting for your dance floor area as standard.
If you wish to have something truly amazing contact us about our stunning concert level upgraded lighting packages.
Can I provisionally book you?
Unfortunately, we don’t take provisional bookings as demand is such that we would be turning clients away on popular dates. However, when you make an official enquiry with us, your enquiry will be logged in our system and you will be given first refusal on your date should anybody else enquire for the same date.
Do Pop of Ages have any specific requirements?
We do request a private room (not toilets!) in which to change.
Something to eat and soft drinks for the duration of our time at the venue please.
We don’t ask for much, but it is important that we have enough energy to put on a superb performance for you.
What is the band power requirement?
We request 2 double 13 amp supplies near to the stage area. We use mainly LED lighting which keeps our power consumption down but we prefer to run lights from one power source and audio equipment from another to reduce the risk of noise interference.
As a rule, we draw no more than 26 amps with everything on and have only ever experienced any issues in events in marquees where the generator capacity has been too low.
Why should I book Pop of Ages?
We are without doubt one of the most popular and experienced party bands in the UK. We have travelled all over and played in every type of venue to all kinds of people, so we bring a wealth of experience to your event, not to mention equipment and live sound of the highest quality.
We care about doing a great job for you – it is important to us that we play something for everybody at your party. We understand that your event is special, and that you only get one chance to get it right.
Can we see some previous client reviews?
Yes of course. Visit our reviews page to see just a small selection.
Does the band have PAT and PLI certificates?
Yes, we can provide copies of our annual PAT and PLI certificates on request.
Will the musicians be the same as shown on your website?
Absolutely. If you book the Pop of Ages band, that is who will perform at your event.
We have never, and will never sub-contract a different group of musicians to perform using our band name.
If one of our musicians is unable to perform due to illness or medical emergency, we have a pool of highly experienced musicians who can act as competent deputy replacements
How do I book you?
How long do you take to set up?
Assuming access to the venue is straight forward and direct (e.g. ground floor room with no steps and vehicle access close to the performance area), once all the equipment is loaded in we can normally be set up and sound checked within an hour. Please note we also need around 30 minutes to freshen up and get changed into our stage clothes before we can start our first set.
How long do you play for?
What time do you start and finish?
We usually start our first set at around 8.30, and play our second towards the final hour of the evening, but again we are totally flexible with this. Arrival and finish times are 6pm and midnight as standard, with early arrival and late finish fees applicable outside of these timings.
Can my sisters/bosses/daughters dog sing with your band?
We love it when people get up to sing a song with us, but we do like to make sure that those singing or playing with us have some experience of being on stage. We’re happy to arrange this with you in advance.
However, past experience has taught us that welcoming impromptu guests onto the stage on the night itself can often end in disaster so we’d rather steer clear of that situation!
Can we use your sound system (PA) for speeches?
Yes, you are welcome to use our PA system and a wireless mic for your speeches provided you have hired us to be set up by that time of course!
How loud will the band be?
We always make sure that our volume levels are such that people at your event can still converse, but really feel as though they are at a gig when they’re on the dance floor. Being a live function band, with electric guitar, drums, keyboards and if chosen a brass section, the nature of the music we play means that we can only turn down so far!
If your chosen venue has a DB limiter, please discuss this with us at the time of your enquiry to make sure that the performance you will receive from us will not be compromised.
What if the band split up before my event?
Like many professional party bands, our work is our livelihood and so we take our commitments very seriously. We have been together for 15 years, performed over 1200 gigs together and had never once let a client down. In the very unlikely event that the band had split up before your party, every effort would be made to find a suitable replacement band.
What will the band wear?
We dress in smart casual clothes for most parties (see our gallery) unless formal attire i.e. Black Tie is requested. In the past, we’ve also been asked to join in with an events theme, which we’re more than happy to do if you wish.
